Glass House

Glass House

Unawatuna, Sri Lanka

On the top of the highest bluff in Unawatuna, obscured by the jungle on a tiny village lane, we found this unique AirB&B. With just a tissue thin delineation between human and nature, the house celebrated both as one, in every space. The space was rich in its simplicity and felt more like camping in a tree house than a luxury stay, which was exactly what we were looking for on this trip.

We spent our weekend reading books, playing in the pool and eating dinner by candlelight on the deck. We had the option to have the grounds caretaker bring us breakfast and dinner each day and we did. She would stroll up the lane from her home with a brightly colored plastic picnic basket, with a tiffin box nestled inside it with all the curries or hoppers we could eat. She would stay to serve us and then return down the lane by an orange glow of torchlight when we finished.

Retreating each night to the lower level where the bedrooms were located we tucked in behind sliding glass doors and fell asleep with the moonlight spilling in through rattan blinds as jungle moved about enthusiastically outside.
