Salt House

Salt House

Hiriketiya, Sri Lanka

Our life, before this moment, had become a series of beach weekends. Sandy bookends holding up long weeks of work and school. We’d begun to settle in, made a few friends and began our three year tour of all the beaches and mountains that Sri Lanka has to offer. It felt like falling in a dream, only we didn’t have to snap awake for another few years. I suppose now, it was silly to think that this dream might end any different than any other falling dream and thus like the rest of the world, the muscles of our entire bodies contracted all at once and sent us jolting upright in bed, heart racing, trying to make contact with familiar things around the room to confirm this reality.

In making contact with the things that still feel real on this island on which I have become marooned, I have decided to roll out some film from a few of our favorite trips from our first six months here. Sri Lanka will need all of us, as will many places and humans that rely on tourists, when this is all over. I know I am not alone in feeling helpless right now, but I believe in the strength and the beauty of the arts and I know I by continuing to create and to share that we can keep these places afloat in our dreams until we make it back to them someday soon.
